Dental veneers: what to know before you decide
Veneers can close gaps, hide stains and reshape worn or chipped teeth. Here is how they work and who they suit.

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth. It can change the color, shape, length and position of a tooth at once, which is why veneers are a popular route to a smile makeover.
Who they suit. People with chipped, worn, stained or slightly crooked teeth, or small gaps. You need healthy gums and teeth without active decay, so any problems are treated first.
How it works. At the first visit we talk about what you want and plan the new shape together. The teeth are then lightly prepared, impressions or scans are taken, and temporary veneers are fitted while your final set is made. At the last visit the veneers are checked for fit and color, then bonded.
Looking after them. Brush twice a day, floss and keep your checkups. Avoid biting ice, pens or hard food with your front teeth. If you grind at night, a night guard protects them. With good care, veneers often last 10 years or more.
Veneers are not right for everyone. A consultation will show whether they are your best option, or whether whitening or bonding would do the job.
